DESCRIPTION OF THE ROLE/ RESPONSILBILITES |
Primary role: Be part of a small team preparing new software for our 400 PC Linux teaching labs, which are running Red-Hat 8 derivative Rocky Linux 8. Liasing with end users around requirements, version management, operational and user acceptance testing. In addition to the technical responsibilities, there will be regular meeting participation and academic staff engagement as part of delivering, deployment and testing of these packages.
Secondary role: Provide on-site day-to-day specialist Linux administrator support for Science and Engineering faculty IT Support team by way of Incident and Service Request tickets. Effectively communicating with users and provide feedback on any new issues found with the Linux support team members. Building systems, troubleshooting OS, application and connectivity issues are to name a few ticket examples but not limited to. There may be involvement with specialist systems or servers where a risk adverse approach is required to protect data. Liaison with multiple IT teams or Service Desk staff in-line with IT and InfoSec policies is a key responsibility.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL EXPERTISE REQUIRED
|
3+ years of specialist Linux desktop and server support and 5+ years in IT desirable. In depth Red-Hat/Ubuntu systems admin knowledge is essential with GUI configuration knowledge desirable. Ability to migrate running systems from one OS version to another, retaining user data and configuration is essential. Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively both as part of a team and in isolation whilst troubleshooting issues is essential. Any Bash scripting knowledge is desirable as is experience working in a centrally managed and configuration environment.

About IT Services
IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast-moving department, we focus on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students, and researchers.
The Team
The architecture team is a key part of the Strategy and Architecture space we work closely with other areas of ITS and the Strategic Change Office to ensure successful delivery of a diverse set of programmes and projects that take place across the University.
The key services provided by the architecture team include:
- Guidance and support to IT Services and the wider university regarding the application of technology to business capabilities.
- Facilitate the development of strategies for the technology evolution to support the universities domains (Teaching and Learning, Finance, HR, Research...etc).
- Engage in capability-based planning to ensure that change is aligned to capabilities which support the strategic direction.
- Work with operational teams to understand the IT landscape and the changes required to ensure quality and reliability.
- Provide assurance of technical and business designs via the Technical Design Authority and inputs to the Business Design Authority.
The Role
The University of Manchester is currently running a project to transform its Integration landscape. The scope of the project is to implement a new Integration platform and transition off legacy platforms to the new platform. The transition will involve a complete rewrite of the Integration services on the new platform.
We are looking to appoint a Solutions Architect for a period of 6 months initially to work with the project team to implement the platform and design the target state Integration services in line with industry standard patterns and best practices. They will need to help understand the current landscape and make recommendations on how best to evolve the current state. The role will work closely with the team to analyse, architect, design, plan and ensure successful implementation of, and transition to the new platform.
The Solutions Architect will report directly to the Strategy and Architecture Manager or a member of the Architecture team and will be responsible for ensuring alignment of their workstream to the rest of the transformation programmes taking place.
This is an exciting role that will have the opportunity to help deliver a strategically aligned programme. The role will also provide the opportunity to work with several highly skilled architects and help feed into the Architecture practice.
The Person
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following key responsibilities, accountabilities, and duties.
- Collaborate with business and technical teams to develop integration strategies and designs that aligns with the Enterprise Architecture and enables seamless communication between the Universities systems of record and data sources.
- Develop an integration blueprint for the project that aligns to the Enterprise Integration strategy and roadmap to drive consistent, reusable patterns.
- Work with other enterprise architects (e.g. business, data, security architects, etc.) to analyse enterprise business context (business strategy and trends) and requirements across the enterprise architecture viewpoints (such as business, information, and solution) to derive the future-state technology architecture.
- Takes full responsibility for ensuring that architectures balance functional and non-functional (e.g. integration mapping, security and data privacy, etc.) requirements across the University. Collaborates with business analysts and business owners to validate requirements.
- Establishes principles, standards, and strategy for integration services in line with the Enterprise strategy and ensures that they are applied correctly and consistently across all integration activities.
- Leads system design activity that align with Enterprise Architecture, including high-level and low-level designs, in collaboration with the integration team and connected applications.
- Takes responsibility for the technical integrity of solution designs, enforcing simplification and reusability of integration services.
- Support the Project Manager in defining the high-level plan for the redesign of services and migration to the Boomi platform.
- Estimate development efforts and exercise governance / assurance over the build and implementation process.
- Ensures that all changes are managed effectively and contributes to formal reviews throughout the project. Provides continued architectural expertise as part of the deployment and early-life support of any solution components.
- Advises on appropriate quality standards and quality control processes relating to solution architecture. Ensures that quality control activities (including testing and accessibility compliance) are carried out satisfactorily. Attends quality reviews as appropriate.
Essential Requirements:
- Knowledge of the Boomi Integration platform and component architecture.
- Hands on experience with Boomi including API Manager, Event streams, Atom, process developer, molecule.
- Technically fluent in back-end Integration patterns (SOAP/REST/API services & other protocols and techniques).
- Design and develop enterprise services using RAML & REST based APIs.
- Experience in Agile / waterfall methodologies.
- 5 years+ experience designing and developing integration solutions.
- Expert with APIs, scripting, and integration patterns.

IT Operations Centre Analyst

We require an IT Operations Analyst to be responsible for maintaining the Client's systems, network, and infrastructure in their IT Operations Centre to their OLA's. with other teams and service owners. This role involves proactively identifying and resolving technical issues, coordinating incident response, ensuring the smooth operation of IT services, managing CMDB updates and change monitoring.
As the IT Operations Analyst you will work closely with other members, various IT teams and stakeholders to provide real-time monitoring, analysis and support, to ensure the stability and availability of critical IT systems, following ITIL processes and best practices.
You will be required to work onsite on a 24x7x365 rotating shift pattern to provide support and monitoring of the clients services and infrastructure
The role will involve working shift a pattern as per their shift rota.
Essential skills and experience required:
As the IT Operations Analyst you will possess the following:
Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure components, including servers, networks, databases, and storage systems.
Experience with monitoring tools, such as Nagios, SolarWinds, Zabbix, or similar.
Familiarity with ITIL processes, including incident management, problem management, change management, configuration management, and service capacity management.
Proficient in event management techniques and tools.
Familiarity with networking protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and routing.
Experience in CMDB management, including updating and maintaining configuration information.

As the IT Operations Analyst you will undertake following:
Monitor and analyse the performance of the services, IT systems, network devices, and infrastructure using various monitoring tools and technologies.
Respond promptly to system alerts and incidents, troubleshoot issues, and take appropriate actions to mitigate disruptions and minimize downtime, following ITIL event and incident management processes.
Coordinate incident management activities, including incident response, escalation, and resolution, adhering to defined procedures and operating level agreements (OLAs) based on ITIL guidelines.

Job Summary
This role will provide Network and Infrastructure technical support for the CTPHQ National Customer Services Centre (CSC). The individual will support services in the CSC portfolio, including operational and project tasks, as required, relating to the maintenance and development of the National CTP IT Services.
This role will be part of a team of engineers covering 7am to 7pm weekdays from the CSC technical ops centre and on call 24\7\365 for critical support of the national infrastructure.
This role is vital to ensure the national infrastructure is available, secure and supported to best practice standards to enable CTP operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Experience in a technically diverse environment preferably as part of a shift rota
- Experience of working with service desk call management systems
- Experience of working within an ITIL service environment working to defined metrics and SLAs
- Experience of Cisco technologies including Routing, Switching, VoIP and Video Conferencing
- Experience of Juniper and Cisco security and firewall devices
- Experience of load balancer technology
- Experience of Cisco switching and routing hardware
- Experience of network security best practice
- Experience of ITIL change management
- Experience of failover testing, resilience and redundancy methodology
- Experience of Network and Infrastructure monitoring and automation tools
- CCNA qualification preferred
- Ability to prioritise, execute tasks and achieve results in a busy Service Operation environment
- UK Driving License
Communication and Working Relationships
- Daily: Communicate with the CSC Service desk, other engineers and line management for ticket management and escalation, phone, email, face to face.
- Daily: Customers for support calls, email, phone, face to face, video, onsite.
- Weekly: Line management to provide incident and project updates, email, face to face
- Daily: Escalate issues to third parties offering third line support, email, phone
- Weekly: Project Teams for collaboration through implementation and transition, phone, email, face to face, video
- Daily: Cross Team collaboration within CTPHQ for support and training, phone, email, face to face
- Occasionally: Attend or Substitute for senior members of the team in meetings with other teams, stakeholders, partners or third parties as a technical representative, phone, video, face to face
Key Result Areas
- This role requires a flexible working approach to meet operational needs and will be required to work as part of a shift system (Mon-Fri 7am-7pm + on call rota 24/7/365).
- Some out of hours and weekend working may be occasionally required.
- The role is office based with occasional work from home
- The role holder may be required to travel to sites around the UK to maintain the infrastructure. Occasionally this may be at short notice, as appropriate, to resolve critical issues.
- Ensure personal work load is managed and prioritised effectively.
- Ensure Adherence to polices, standards, controls and best practice
- Ensure SLAs for services in the CSC Service portfolio are met
- Provide technical support for National infrastructure relating to BAU and Projects to ensure objectives are being met in line with CTP priorities
- Provide resilience and failover testing to ensure all CSC managed Infrastructure is tested on a regular basis to ensure failover functions as designed
- Create and maintain technical documentation to ensure all services are maintained and knowledge is shared
- Proactively maintain and update the infrastructure to ensure security and reliability
- Proactively monitor environments to help prevent issues arising
- Proactively monitor availability and capacity and resolve or escalate any issues as appropriate
- Proactively engage in following and implementing best practice in line with the latest supported guidance.
- Ensure change and release management processes and procedures are adhered to mitigate against unplanned downtime and service outages
- Ensure internal and external standards are followed to ensure services are implemented in a supportable and scalable way
- Ensure security procedures are followed to comply with the relevant accreditation, procedures and/or guidance.
Scope for Impact
The job holder will responsible for managing their own time relating to Incidents, Service Requests and Problem management within defined priorities and SLAs.
Day to day the individual may need to use their judgement to highlight and risks relating to the technical infrastructure that may have a negative effect on services or operational staff.
Whilst on call the individual may need to make decisions, based on supporting the technical infrastructure, that may impact live operations and they may need explain any impact or service outage to the relevant stakeholder whilst both parties are under pressure.
