Accessibility Digital Lead

Rate: £150-£200

Length: 3 months with possibility of extension to 6 months

Location: Home working

Work with designers and developers to ensure quality and accessibility (legal) web standards are met.

  • ensure accessibility is being maintained across the HSE, particularly adhering to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 of ‘AA’ standard, across external and internal channels.
  • defining and establishing best practice based on WCAG standards that make our content and external and internal communication platforms usable by all, by default.
  • increasing awareness and integration of Digital Inclusion and make better use of skills, knowledge and assets (e.g. training, guidance material, testing, etc).
  • acting as a subject matter specialist for accessibility regulation application, contributing to a programme of work.
  • managing the accessibility statements, ensuring all HSE services publish and maintain an accessibility statement.
  • working closely with user research, design and customer insight functions to drive a deeper understanding of user needs, using evidence-based recommendations.
  • collaborating with GDS and other government departments on advances in accessibility and the integration of best practice.
  • ensuring content quality checks and regular monitoring of digital services, ensuring accessibility is in place.

Essential experience:

  • Experience of production of accessible PDFs and the remediation to ensure they meet WCAG2.1 compliance.
  • Experience of producing accessible HTML5, CSS and JavaScript
  • Strong understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 (Lead Criteria).
  • Strong understanding of content accessibility, taking responsibility for content quality and design.
  • Experienced in user-centred content design.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluating content performance using native analytics and third party tools to define and improve content.
  • Proven experience of managing relationships with stakeholders.
  • Experience in working with content management systems.
  • Evidence of working to WCAG2.1 guidelines within a communications role.
